The Schengen area lets a single short-stay visa cover travel across most of Europe, but there is no single Schengen office in Pakistan. Every member country runs its own embassy and booking channel, and the visa you receive is issued by whichever country your trip is built around. Getting that choice right is the first and most important step for a Pakistani applicant.

The European Commission's rule decides it. If your trip covers only France, for example, apply to France. If you visit several, apply to the country where you will spend the longest time. If the stays are equal, apply to the country you enter first. As a general rule you also apply in the country where you legally live. A trip with most nights in Milan and a short stop in Munich is an Italian file, not a German one, and booking the wrong country can mean starting again from zero.

Each country then has its own route. France works through France-Visas and AEG Travel Services, with the interview at the French Embassy in Islamabad. Italy uses BLS-Intiana centres locked to your permanent residence. Germany runs an RK-Termin waiting list in which the mission allocates your date. Greece books through the GVCW platform, the Netherlands through VFS Global, and Spain through its Intiana visa centres.

The documents, by contrast, are largely shared. Schengen States have agreed a common list for applicants in Pakistan: the form, photos, a passport within the issue and validity limits, travel medical insurance, a copy of your CNIC as proof of residence, the fee and fingerprints. On top come the Pakistan-specific papers: a NADRA Family Registration Certificate in English, bank statements signed and stamped by the bank, your NTN certificate and FBR return acknowledgements, and proof of your job, business or studies. Each embassy can add its own extras, such as the Dutch sponsor form.

Insurance is the item with a minimum written into EU law. The Visa Code requires cover for urgent medical care, emergency hospital treatment, repatriation and death, valid across the Schengen States for your whole stay. For a multiple-entry visa you prove cover for the first trip and sign a declaration about later ones.

Typical mistakes include paying someone to unlock a slot, buying non-refundable flights before the decision, a family policy that names only the main applicant, and assuming premium lounges speed up the consulate. The decision clock only starts once the consulate accepts your file.

Do I need a paid flight ticket for a Schengen visa? No. The common list for Pakistan asks for a return flight reservation, not a paid ticket.

Do visa centre premium services make the decision faster? No. Lounges and couriers add convenience, but the centres say they play no part in the consulate's decision.
