Nepal does not ask Pakistani passport holders to arrange a visa before they travel. Pakistani citizens get a visa on arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu, and as SAARC citizens they receive it free for up to 30 days on their first visit of each calendar year. Pakistan is not on Nepal's list of nationalities barred from visas on arrival. A second trip in the same year is charged at the normal tourist rates of US$30, US$50 or US$125 for 15, 30 or 90 days. Even the free visa starts with the online tourist visa form, and you can also apply in advance through the Embassy of Nepal in Islamabad if you prefer to land with the visa already in your passport.

Kathmandu's temple squares, the lakeside at Pokhara and the Himalayan trekking routes draw visitors from all over the world, and for Pakistanis the visa side is refreshingly simple. Pakistani passport holders can get a visa on arrival in Nepal, and the Embassy of Nepal in Islamabad confirms that a 30-day tourist visa is free once every calendar year. That concession exists because Pakistan is a SAARC member, and Nepal gives the same treatment to other SAARC citizens except Afghans.

On arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport, you complete an arrival card and the online tourist visa form. You can fill in the form on the Department of Immigration website before you leave home, or at a kiosk inside the terminal. Either way you get a receipt with a barcode, which is valid for 15 days. If you owe a fee, pay it at the bank counter, then hand your receipts and passport to the immigration officer. On a free visit there is nothing to pay, but the form is still required.

The free 30 days apply only to your first visit in a visa year, which Nepal counts from January to December. If you return later that year, you choose a paid tourist visa: US$30 for 15 days, US$50 for 30 days or US$125 for 90 days, each allowing multiple entries. Fees are not refunded once the visa is issued. Make sure your passport has at least six months of validity left before you travel, since the Department of Immigration asks for that on every tourist visa.

Some travellers prefer to sort the visa out at home. The Embassy of Nepal in Islamabad accepts advance applications: fill in the online mission form, email the confirmation slip, your passport bio page, a CNIC copy and either a sponsorship letter or six months of bank statements with a hotel booking and return ticket. The Embassy usually answers within four working days, then asks you to visit with your original passport. Its current prices are PKR 8,700 for 15 days, PKR 14,500 for 30 days and PKR 36,250 for 90 days, all multiple entry.

If you fall for the mountains and want more time, tourist visas can be extended at the Department of Immigration in Kathmandu or its office in Pokhara for US$3 a day, with a 15-day minimum, up to 150 days in a visa year. Overstaying costs US$5 a day, so extend before your visa ends. Nepal does not publish an approval or refusal rate for Pakistani visitors. Some trekking areas need separate permits, and the Department of Immigration lists those routes and fees on its own website.

Quick answers

FAQ

Do Pakistanis need a visa for Nepal?

Yes, but you do not have to arrange it before you fly. The Embassy of Nepal in Islamabad confirms that Pakistani passport holders can obtain a visa on arrival, and Pakistan is not on the Department of Immigration list of nationalities that must apply in advance. You can also get the visa from the Embassy beforehand if you prefer.

Is the Nepal visa really free for Pakistanis?

Yes, on your first visit each calendar year. Nepal grants SAARC citizens, except Afghans, a free tourist visa of up to 30 days on their first visit in a visa year, which runs from January to December. A second visit in the same year is charged at the normal tourist rates.

How much is the Nepal tourist visa if I visit twice in one year?

The Department of Immigration lists US$30 for 15 days, US$50 for 30 days and US$125 for 90 days. These tourist visas are multiple entry. Fees are not refunded once the visa is issued.

How does the visa on arrival work at Kathmandu airport?

Fill in the arrival card and the online tourist visa form, either on the Department of Immigration website before you fly or at the kiosks in the airport, and keep the barcode receipt. Pay any fee at the bank counter, then show your form receipt, payment receipt and passport at the immigration desk. The free visa still needs the online form, but no fee is charged.

Can I apply for the Nepal visa in Pakistan before travelling?

Yes. Fill in the online mission form on NepaliPort, then email the confirmation slip with copies of your passport, CNIC and supporting documents to the Embassy of Nepal in Islamabad. It usually replies within 4 working days and asks you to visit on a weekday between 9:30 am and 12:30 pm with your original passport. The Embassy charges PKR 8,700 for 15 days, PKR 14,500 for 30 days and PKR 36,250 for 90 days.

Can someone else collect my passport from the Embassy of Nepal?

Yes, if you arrange it first. Email the Embassy an authority letter naming the person, with a copy of their CNIC, national ID or passport and their phone number, before they visit. Otherwise you are expected to submit and collect the passport yourself.

How long can I stay in Nepal and can I extend?

The free visa covers up to 30 days. You can extend a tourist visa inside Nepal at the Department of Immigration in Kalikasthan, Kathmandu, or the Immigration Office in Pokhara, for US$3 a day with a minimum of 15 days. Bring your passport and a recent photo. Your total tourist stay cannot go above 150 days in one visa year.

What happens if I overstay in Nepal?

The Department of Immigration lists a late fine of US$5 per day for overstaying. Extend before your visa runs out rather than paying the fine at departure.

How long is a Nepal visa from the Embassy valid before I travel?

You must enter Nepal within 6 months of the issue date, and your permitted stay counts from the day you arrive, not the day the visa was printed.

Can Pakistani students study in Nepal for free?

The visa fee is waived. The Department of Immigration fee table marks the study visa as free for Pakistani and Sri Lankan nationals. You still need the documents it lists, including a recommendation from the Ministry of Education, your college admission receipt and a recent bank statement.
