Summary
- Visa type
- French short-stay visa valid for French Polynesia (overseas-territory visa)
- Stay limit
- Up to three months in any six-month period
- Entries
- Single or multiple, as stated on the visa
Entry to French Polynesia is governed by the French order (arrêté) of 29 December 2011, which differs from the rules for European France and the other overseas territories. Pakistan is not named in Annex II, the list of nationalities exempt from a visa for up to three months in six, so a Pakistani traveller needs a short-stay visa that expressly states it is valid for French Polynesia.
French Polynesia spreads 118 islands across the South Pacific, from Tahiti and Moorea to Bora Bora and the Tuamotu atolls. Overwater bungalows, black-pearl farms, surfing at Teahupo'o and whale watching draw honeymooners and divers, and some Pakistani visitors come for conferences or to see relatives working in Papeete.
French Polynesia sets its own entry rules through a French order of 29 December 2011. The High Commission stresses that these rules differ from those of mainland France and the other overseas territories. Pakistan is not on the territory's visa-exemption list, meaning Pakistanis must hold a visa issued specifically for French Polynesia.
The application runs through France-Visas: select French Polynesia, then take your papers to the collection centre that the French embassy in Islamabad directs you to. The fee is EUR 9, and the visa allows up to three months within six.
Most visitors land at Tahiti-Faa'a airport, where the border police check funds, a return ticket or repatriation insurance, and the reason for the trip. If you stay with friends or family, ask your host for an attestation d'accueil validated by their town hall.
People living in France or elsewhere in the full Schengen zone on a current permit or long-stay visa need no separate visa for a holiday. There is no official turnaround, so lodge your file well before buying non-refundable flights; the embassy takes applications six months out.
Checklist
Document requirements
- Pakistani passport valid for three months or more after your planned departure from French Polynesia, under 10 years old and with at least two blank pages
- France-Visas short-stay application with French Polynesia as the destination
- EUR 9 visa fee
- Means of subsistence for the stay, such as an international bank card or cash
- Guarantee of repatriation, such as a return ticket or travel insurance
- Hotel, guesthouse or cruise bookings for a tourist trip
- For a stay with friends or family, an attestation d'accueil validated by the host's town hall
- For salaried work, a work authorisation issued by the Government of French Polynesia
Pakistan is absent from the French Polynesia exemption list, so ordinary passport holders apply for a territory-specific visa through France-Visas and the visa centre used by the French Embassy in Pakistan. The High Commission notes that residence permits issued outside French Polynesia do not give a right to settle there; for short visits, a valid French or Schengen residence permit or long-stay visa does exempt the holder from the visa for up to 90 days in 180.

Quick answers
FAQ
Do Pakistanis need a visa for French Polynesia?
Yes. Pakistan is not on Annex II of the order of 29 December 2011, the list of nationalities that may visit French Polynesia without a visa. Pakistani citizens need a short-stay visa marked valid for French Polynesia.
Is the Tahiti visa the same as a Schengen visa?
No. French Polynesia has separate rules, and the Ministry of the Interior confirms that an overseas visa and a Schengen visa are different documents. Neither one replaces the other.
What is the fee?
EUR 9 under the France-Visas fee table, the same low band used for New Caledonia and Wallis and Futuna. Service charges at the visa centre, if any, are extra.
How long can I stay in Tahiti and the islands?
Up to three months in a six-month period, as set by the order and shown on your visa.
What will the border police check at Faa'a?
Your passport and visa, money for the stay, a return ticket or insurance covering repatriation, and proof of why you are visiting, such as hotel or cruise bookings.
I am staying with friends in Papeete. What do they need to send?
An attestation d'accueil. Your host gets the form from their town hall, signs it and has it validated there before sending it to you.
Does my residence permit from Italy or Spain help?
For a short visit, yes. Annex II waives the visa for people with a current Italian, Spanish or other full-Schengen residence card or long-stay visa, for up to three months in six, but that card gives no right to settle in the territory.
Can I go on a cruise that stops in Tahiti without a visa?
Only in narrow cases. Cruise passengers may land for a stop of up to 24 hours if they hold, for example, an EU, Canadian, Japanese or US residence permit, or a French visa for another part of France.
Where do I apply in Pakistan?
Complete the France-Visas form with French Polynesia as the destination and hand it in at the centre the French mission in Islamabad allocates. The window opens six months before your trip.
Can I work on a short stay?
Salaried work needs a work authorisation from the Government of French Polynesia. Other business visitors should carry papers on their profession and the local firms expecting them.
Who handles foreigner questions in Papeete?
The Directorate of Regulation and Legal Affairs (DIRAJ) of the High Commission, at etrangers@polynesie-francaise.gouv.fr or (689) 40 46 86 31. The border police unit sits at Tahiti-Faa'a airport.
Is there an official refusal rate?
No. Outcome statistics for French Polynesia visas are not made public for Pakistani nationals.
