Visa type
Bosnia and Herzegovina short-stay visa (Visa C) from the Embassy in Islamabad
Stay limit
Up to 90 days within six months

Single or multiple, as stated on the visa

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Bosnia and Herzegovina states that citizens of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan need a visa to enter, leave or travel through the country; only Pakistani diplomatic and service passports are exempt, for stays of up to 90 days. Ordinary passport holders must get the visa from a diplomatic or consular mission of Bosnia and Herzegovina before reaching the border, and the Ministry names the Embassy of Bosnia and Herzegovina in Islamabad as the mission serving Pakistan.

Bosnia and Herzegovina sits in the western Balkans, with Ottoman-era Sarajevo, the old bridge of Mostar, the waterfalls at Kravica and Una National Park among its draws. Pakistani visitors come for tourism, family visits, business with local firms, conferences and Islamic heritage, usually flying in via Istanbul or Gulf hubs.

Pakistani passport holders need a visa. The country's Ministry of Foreign Affairs states plainly that citizens of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan must have a visa to enter, exit or pass through Bosnia and Herzegovina, while diplomatic and service passports are exempt for up to 90 days.

The visa must be obtained before you travel, from a mission of Bosnia and Herzegovina. For Pakistan that is the embassy in Islamabad. Most visitors need the short-stay Visa C, which allows up to 90 days within six months and can be single or multiple entry, valid for up to a year.

Expect to show your purpose and your means. The Service for Foreigners' Affairs sets a minimum of BAM 150 per day of stay, and a host can send you a letter of invitation verified for BAM 10. Your passport must remain valid for at least three months after the visa expires.

A visa at the border is possible only in exceptional cases, costs BAM 100 and covers up to 15 days, so do not rely on it. The consular fee and processing time are not published, so contact the embassy in Islamabad early and allow plenty of time.

Quick answers

FAQ

Do Pakistanis need a visa for Bosnia and Herzegovina?

Yes. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs says citizens of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan need a visa to enter, exit or transit Bosnia and Herzegovina. Only holders of Pakistani diplomatic and service passports are exempt, for up to 90 days.

Where do Pakistanis apply?

At a diplomatic or consular mission of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The Ministry's page on Pakistan names the Embassy of Bosnia and Herzegovina in Islamabad as the mission that serves Pakistan, so start there.

Which visa do tourists and business visitors need?

The short-stay visa, known as Visa C. It covers tourism, business, private visits, training, conferences, sports, cultural and religious events. Each stay, or several stays together, may not exceed 90 days within six months from the first entry.

Can I get a visa at the airport in Sarajevo?

Only in exceptional cases. Border posts such as Sarajevo, Banja Luka, Tuzla and Mostar airports can issue a single-entry Visa C for up to 15 days, at a fee of BAM 100. Plan to get your visa in advance, because the law expects you to hold it before arrival.

How much does the visa cost?

The Ministry does not publish the consular fee for Pakistani applicants, so confirm it with the Embassy in Islamabad. The Service for Foreigners' Affairs lists BAM 100 for an exceptional border visa and BAM 10 for verifying a letter of invitation.

How long must my passport be valid?

Your passport must stay valid for at least three months beyond the expiry date of the visa. Check this before applying, because a visa cannot be issued on a passport that runs out too soon.

How much money should I carry?

Bosnia and Herzegovina sets a minimum of BAM 150, or the same amount in a convertible currency, for each day of your intended stay. Border police can ask you to prove it in cash or with a card recognised by local banks.

What is a letter of invitation?

It is a letter from a citizen of Bosnia and Herzegovina, a foreigner with long-term residence, or a company registered in the country, inviting you for a set purpose and period. The host has it verified by the Service for Foreigners' Affairs for a fee of BAM 10.

Can I get a multiple-entry visa?

Yes. Visa C can be single or multiple entry and is issued for up to one year, but the 90 days in six months limit still applies. A longer stay needs a Visa D, which allows up to six months within a year.

Do I need a visa just to change planes in Sarajevo?

The Ministry says Pakistani citizens need a visa for travel through the country as well as for entry. An airport transit visa (Visa A) exists for passing through the international transit area, so check with the embassy before booking a connection.

Can I extend a short-stay visa inside the country?

Only for force majeure, humanitarian, or serious professional or personal reasons. The request goes on the official extension form (Form No. 5) to the Service for Foreigners' Affairs before your current visa ends.

Is there an official refusal rate?

No. Bosnia and Herzegovina does not publish visa refusal statistics for Pakistani applicants.
