Pakistan is not on Tonga’s list of nationalities given a visitor visa on arrival, published by the Ministry of Revenue and Customs. Citizens of all other countries need an entry permit issued by the Immigration Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs before arriving. The permit is issued as a letter. Tonga’s missions describe it as a letter of authority that lets you travel to Tonga and then receive your visitor’s visa on arrival.

Tonga is a Polynesian kingdom of around 170 islands, where humpback whales calve off Vava’u between July and October and the blowholes of Mapu’a ’a Vaea spray along the Tongatapu coast. Pakistani visitors need permission before they fly.

Tonga’s Ministry of Revenue and Customs publishes the list of nationalities that receive a 30-day visitor visa on arrival. Pakistan is not on it, and citizens of all other countries must obtain an entry permit from the Immigration Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs before arriving.

The permit comes as a letter. Tonga’s missions describe it as a letter of authority to travel, after which the visitor’s visa itself is issued when you land. The Tonga High Commission in Canberra lists a processing fee of AUD 69 and quotes fifteen working days.

The application needs a completed form with your own signature, a passport copy, your itinerary, a clear reason for the visit, evidence of funds and details of visas you have held before. Your local sponsor may be interviewed.

At the border you need a passport valid six months, a return ticket and enough money for the stay. Work, business and study are not allowed on a visitor’s visa, and extensions are handled in Nuku’alofa or Neiafu.
