St Eustatius, or Statia, has been a Dutch public body since 2010 but is not inside Schengen. Pakistanis do not appear on the list of nationalities exempt from the visa requirement, so a Caribbean visa issued by the Dutch authorities is required, with the application lodged personally at VFS Global in Pakistan. The longest permitted stay is 90 days in a row within each 180-day span.

St Eustatius, known locally as Statia, is a small island in the northern Leeward Islands with about 3,000 residents. Its skyline is dominated by The Quill, a dormant volcano whose crater holds rainforest, and its capital Oranjestad still has the restored Fort Oranje overlooking the anchorage that made the island a busy 18th-century trading port.

Statia is best known for history and diving rather than resorts. In 1776 its fort returned the salute of an American ship, an event remembered as the First Salute, and today the protected waters around the island contain old anchors, wrecks and reefs that draw a steady trickle of divers.

For Pakistani passport holders, a visa is required. The Netherlands names the nationalities that may come to its Caribbean islands without one, and Pakistan is missing from that list. You therefore need a Caribbean visa in your passport before boarding any flight to F.D. Roosevelt Airport.

The application is filed personally at VFS Global in Pakistan, up to three months before departure. Prepare the signed form, a passport under ten years old, residence and employment or study papers, island accommodation, bank statements, a booking for the journey and medical cover of at least US$15,000.

The visa costs EUR 80 and is usually decided within 15 days. It covers all six Dutch Caribbean islands, so a stop in St Maarten on the way is included. Travellers already holding a multiple-entry Schengen, British or Irish visa, or certain residence cards, may not need it.

Checklist

Document requirements

  • Caribbean visa form with your signature
  • Passport issued within the last decade, signed by you, with a minimum of two unused pages and three months' validity after leaving the islands
  • Recent photo meeting Dutch rules, unless VFS captures one digitally
  • Pakistani residence proof (bring the original and a colour copy)
  • Something that ties you to Pakistan: an employer letter with three months of salary slips or statements, a company registration or income tax return, or an enrolment certificate
  • Accommodation reservation in Oranjestad or elsewhere on Statia for the full visit
  • Bank statements for the last quarter showing who pays the travel and living costs
  • Reservation for the return or onward journey; buying the ticket is not required
  • Medical policy in your name valid on all Dutch Caribbean islands, with a minimum of US$15,000 in cover

Holders of an ordinary Pakistani passport need the visa; Pakistani diplomatic passport holders do not. A Caribbean visa is also unnecessary for anyone holding a Schengen visa for multiple entries, a multiple-entry British or Irish visa, or residence status in a Schengen country, the UK, Ireland, the United States or Canada. A visitor visa for the US or Canada is not sufficient for Pakistani nationals.

Quick answers

FAQ

Do Pakistanis need a visa for St Eustatius?

Yes. Pakistani nationals must obtain a short-stay Caribbean visa before travelling to Statia, because Pakistan is not exempt.

Is St Eustatius the same as Sint Eustatius or Statia?

Yes. Sint Eustatius is the Dutch name, Statia is the everyday local one, and Dutch government pages write St Eustatius.

How much will the visa cost me?

EUR 80 according to the Pakistan fee schedule of the Netherlands, with the VFS Global service charge on top.

Which visa centre do I use?

VFS Global, which has offices in Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad. Book an appointment and come yourself; children must also come.

Can I visit other islands on the same visa?

Yes. It is valid for all six Dutch Caribbean islands, Aruba and St Maarten included, though not for Europe.

What is the maximum stay?

Ninety days in a row, counted within any 180-day span.

Does a Schengen or UK visa replace the Caribbean visa?

Yes, if it is valid for multiple entries. Residence cards issued by Schengen states, Britain, Ireland, the US or Canada also qualify. One-entry visas do not.

Do I need a visa just to change planes?

Not if you stay in the airport transit area on Statia, Saba or Bonaire for under two days and hold an onward ticket. Leaving the airport does require a visa.

How long does processing take?

Most applicants receive an answer within 15 calendar days. Apply three months ahead at the very earliest.

Which insurance should I buy?

Health cover in your own name that is valid on every Dutch Caribbean island for the full visit and pays at least US$15,000 for hospital treatment, emergencies and repatriation.

Can a relative on Statia invite me?

Yes, but it is the same visa. Follow the NetherlandsWorldwide checklist for visiting family or friends rather than the one for tourism.

What happens if I am refused?

A refusal for Statia can be contested; the decision letter tells you how and by when.

Is paid work allowed on a visitor visa?

No. Paid employment is excluded. Anyone hired on Statia needs a work permit arranged through the local authorities.

Does my child need to attend the appointment?

Yes. Applicants of every age, including infants, must appear in person. A child travelling without one or both parents also needs a birth certificate extract and signed parental consent.

I want to stay more than 90 days. What then?

A short-stay visa cannot be stretched past 90 days. Longer stays need a residence permit from RCN, the Dutch government office for Bonaire, Statia and Saba.
