Summary

Embassy visa required
Visa type
Schengen short-stay visa (type C), usually Italian; San Marino issues no visa of its own
Stay limit
Up to 30 days without a stay permit (within the Schengen 90/180-day limit)
Entries
As allowed by the Schengen visa

San Marino does not issue entry visas. Because the only way in is across Italian territory, visitors from outside the Schengen area must hold whatever authorisation the Schengen area requires before departure, which for Pakistani citizens is a Schengen visa. Pakistan also appears on the Schengen-wide airport transit visa list. Since Italy surrounds San Marino, the usual route for a Pakistani resident is an Italian Schengen visa lodged through BLS-Intiana. Staying in San Marino beyond 30 days requires a stay permit from the Gendarmerie’s Foreigners’ Office.

San Marino is one of the world’s oldest republics, perched on Monte Titano above the Adriatic coast, with three medieval towers, a walled old town and views across Emilia-Romagna. It is entirely surrounded by Italy.

San Marino does not issue entry visas. Its Department of Foreign Affairs explains that reaching the republic means crossing the Schengen area, so visitors from outside Schengen must already hold the authorisation needed for Schengen entry. For Pakistani citizens that is a Schengen visa.

Because the republic sits inside Italy, most Pakistani travellers apply for an Italian Schengen visa. The Embassy of Italy in Islamabad has outsourced appointments to BLS-Intiana, and you must apply at the centre for the district where you permanently live.

The Schengen visa costs 90 euros for adults, and the application needs the form, a photo, a passport valid three months past departure, 30,000-euro travel insurance and evidence of purpose and funds. Apply between six months and 15 days before travel.

Short visits need nothing more. If you stay beyond 30 days, San Marino law requires a stay permit from the Gendarmerie’s Foreigners’ Office, applied for within those 30 days.

San Marino charges no visa fee of its own because it does not issue entry visas. The cost is that of the Schengen visa you need to reach it: the European Commission sets 90 euros for adults and 45 euros for children aged 6 to 12, and the visa centre may add a service charge.

Quick answers

FAQ

Do Pakistanis need a visa for San Marino?

Yes, in practice. San Marino issues no visas of its own, but you must cross the Schengen area to reach it, so Pakistani citizens need a Schengen visa.

Does San Marino have an embassy visa in Pakistan?

No. San Marino does not grant entry visas to non-EU nationals.

Which country’s visa should I get?

San Marino is enclosed by Italy, so the usual choice is an Italian Schengen visa. Apply to the Schengen country that is your main destination.

Where do I apply in Pakistan?

For Italy, appointments and applications go through BLS-Intiana. Centres in the Islamabad embassy’s jurisdiction are Islamabad, Lahore, Multan and Faisalabad; the Karachi consulate covers Karachi and Quetta.

Can I apply at any BLS centre?

No. You must use the centre for the consular district where you permanently live.

How much does the visa cost?

The Schengen fee is 90 euros for adults and 45 euros for children aged 6 to 12, plus any service charge collected by the visa centre.

How long can I stay in San Marino?

Up to 30 days without a permit. Beyond 30 days you must apply to the Gendarmerie’s Foreigners’ Office for a stay permit within that period.

Do I need a multiple-entry visa?

The consulate decides the number of entries. A multiple-entry visa allows several visits to the Schengen area while it is valid, which helps if you will leave and re-enter.

Can I get a visa on arrival in San Marino?

No. The Department of Foreign Affairs says the authorisation for Schengen entry and transit must be held before departure.

Do I need an airport transit visa through Europe?

Pakistan is on the Schengen-wide airport transit visa list, so even a connection through a Schengen airport needs an airport transit visa unless you hold another valid visa.

When should I apply?

At least 15 days and up to six months before travel.

How long does a decision take?

Normally 15 days, which can stretch to 45 days if more checks or documents are needed.

What insurance is needed?

Travel medical insurance of at least 30,000 euros covering the whole Schengen area for the length of the stay.

How long must my passport be valid?

At least three months after you leave the Schengen area, issued within the last ten years, with two blank pages.

Who issues stay permits?

The Gendarmerie’s Foreigners’ Office. Permits cover stays of three months to one year, including for tourism.

Can I go for work?

Not as a tourist. Stay permits exist for work, family reunification, cohabitation and study, among other reasons; contact the Department of Foreign Affairs first.

Is there an official refusal rate for San Marino trips?

No. San Marino issues no visas, and Schengen refusal data is published by issuing country.

Who do I contact in San Marino?

The Department of Foreign Affairs at info@esteri.sm for procedures, or the Gendarmerie Foreigners’ Office for stay permits.

Does a Schengen visa guarantee entry?

No. Border officers can still refuse entry if the purpose of the trip or your means of support are not shown.
