Visa type
French short-stay visa valid for Martinique (overseas-territory visa, single-territory or DFA)
Stay limit
Up to 90 days in any 180-day period
Entries
Single or multiple, as stated on the visa

Martinique applies the French order (arrêté) of 26 July 2011 rather than the Schengen rules. Annex II of the order sets out who may enter without a visa, and Pakistan is absent from it. Pakistani nationals must therefore hold a short-stay visa valid for Martinique, either issued for Martinique alone or marked DFA for the French departments of the Americas.

Martinique is a mountainous French island in the eastern Caribbean, crowned by Mount Pelée, with Fort-de-France as its capital. Travellers come for white-sand coves around Sainte-Anne, rum estates, botanical gardens and hiking, and many arrive on cruise ships or as part of a Caribbean tour.

Pakistani passport holders need a visa. Martinique is French but not part of Schengen, and its exemption list in the order of 26 July 2011 leaves out Pakistan. The visa must state that it is valid for Martinique, on its own or under the DFA mention.

A DFA visa is handy for island hopping: it also covers Guadeloupe and French Guiana, as well as Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon. Whatever the sticker says, the total time across these territories is limited to 90 days in any 180.

The route is France-Visas plus an appointment at the centre chosen by the French embassy, and the fee is EUR 60. A Pakistani with a current long-stay visa or residence card from France or a full Schengen country can visit without it.

Arrival is usually at Aimé Césaire airport or the cruise port of Fort-de-France. Bring bookings, proof of funds, insurance and a return flight. Official texts set no turnaround, so plan your dates generously; the window to apply opens six months before departure.

Checklist

Document requirements

  • Pakistani passport that remains valid at least three months after leaving Martinique, has two blank pages and was issued less than 10 years ago
  • Short-stay overseas visa application lodged via France-Visas
  • EUR 60 fee (EUR 35 for a child aged 6 to under 12)
  • Passport photo meeting international standards
  • Hotel booking, villa rental or hosting certificate
  • Recent bank statements or sponsor letter showing funds
  • Flight booking out of Martinique
  • Travel insurance covering medical costs

Pakistani applicants use France-Visas and attend the visa centre that the French Embassy in Pakistan designates. The Prefecture of Martinique deals with residence permits for foreigners already on the island, not with first visas. Long-stay visas and residence cards from France or full Schengen members, while current, replace the visa for visits of up to 90 days per 180.

Quick answers

FAQ

Do Pakistanis need a visa for Martinique?

Yes. Pakistan does not appear in Annex II of the French order of 26 July 2011, which lists the passports exempt from a visa for Martinique. You need a short-stay visa that names Martinique or carries the DFA mention.

Can I enter Martinique with a visa for mainland France?

No. A Schengen visa is valid for European France only. The Ministry of the Interior says you need a separate overseas visa for Martinique and must apply for each one.

How much is the visa fee?

France-Visas lists EUR 60 for adults and EUR 35 for children aged 6 to under 12. Children under 6 pay no fee.

What does DFA mean on a visa?

It stands for the French departments of the Americas. A DFA sticker lets you enter Martinique, Guadeloupe and French Guiana, and the order adds Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon, all within one 90-day allowance.

How long is the maximum stay?

90 days in any 180-day period, shared across all the territories your visa covers.

Where will I land?

Aimé Césaire international airport at Le Lamentin, which operates around the clock. Cruise passengers usually arrive at Fort-de-France, the permanent seaport; Le Marin, La Trinité and Saint-Pierre open as needed.

Does the Prefecture of Martinique issue tourist visas?

No. Its foreigners' service handles residence permits, receipts and return visas for people living on the island. Tourists apply abroad through France-Visas.

Can I get a visa at the airport if my trip is urgent?

Only in exceptional cases. The order allows a border visa of up to 15 days when an unforeseeable and pressing reason prevented you from applying earlier, and you must prove it.

I live in Germany on a residence card. Do I need the visa?

Not for a short trip. Germany applies the full Schengen rules, so a current German card lets you holiday in Martinique for up to 90 days per 180 without a visa.

What passport validity is needed?

Three months beyond your departure date, at least two blank pages, and an issue date within the last 10 years.

When should I apply?

As early as you can. Files are accepted up to six months before travel, and the French Embassy in Pakistan warns that appointment waits grow in busy seasons.

Do I need a visa just to change planes at Le Lamentin?

Possibly. The order applies the same airport transit visa rules as mainland France to air transit through Martinique, so check the France-Visas wizard for your passport and route before booking a connection.

Can I travel on to Europe after my stay?

Not on the Martinique visa, which is not valid for the Schengen area. The Ministry of the Interior says someone already in Martinique can apply to the prefect of Martinique for a Schengen short-stay visa.

Is there an official refusal rate?

No. Approval and rejection numbers for Martinique visas are not released for Pakistani nationals.
