Pakistan is on Malawi’s list of Category One countries, published by the Department of Immigration and Citizenship Services on its e-Visa portal. Nationals of Category One countries must obtain a visa or prior authorization before departure, so a Pakistani passport holder cannot rely on the visa on arrival that Malawi introduced for Category Two countries from 24 February 2026. Apply on evisa.gov.mw, pay online and print the approval letter, which must be shown at the port of entry. A single-entry visa costs US$50 and is valid for three months from the date of issue.

Lake Malawi, the tea estates of Thyolo and the wildlife of Liwonde draw a steady stream of visitors to Malawi. Pakistani passport holders can go, but only with a visa arranged before they fly. Malawi’s Department of Immigration and Citizenship Services runs the whole process online through the official e-Visa portal.

The rules changed on 24 February 2026, when Malawi began offering visa on arrival to nationals of what it calls Category Two countries. Pakistan was not included. It sits on the Category One list, alongside countries such as India, Bangladesh, Nepal and Egypt, whose citizens must obtain a visa or prior authorization before departure. Airlines have been told to board without a visa only those travellers who are Category Two nationals.

Applying is straightforward. Create an account on evisa.gov.mw, fill in the form with your passport details, travel dates and purpose, and upload a scan of your passport data page and a photo. Scans are required; pictures taken with a phone camera are not accepted. Pay by Visa or Mastercard in US dollars and keep the confirmation email.

A single-entry visa costs US$50 and stays valid for three months from the date it is issued, not from the day you arrive. Multiple-entry visas cost US$150 for six months or US$250 for twelve months, and a seven-day transit visa is US$50. A convenience fee is added at payment, and no fee is refunded if the application is turned down.

Malawi aims to decide within three working days. Once approved, download and print the approval letter and carry it with the passport you applied with, because the visa is linked to that document. Immigration officers at the border still make the final decision on entry.

Checklist

Document requirements

  • Pakistani passport, with its data page details entered exactly as printed (the e-visa is tied to the passport used to apply)
  • Scanned copy of the passport data page (scans only; camera photos of documents are not accepted)
  • Recent passport-style photograph, uploaded as a scan
  • Travel details, including expected dates of entry and departure and the purpose of travel
  • Any supporting documents the online form asks for, such as a residence permit if you live outside Pakistan
  • Visa or Mastercard credit or debit card to pay the visa fee and the convenience fee in US dollars
  • Printed e-Visa approval letter, to show at passport control on arrival

Pakistan appears on the Category One list (countries that require a visa well in advance, or prior authorization). Every Pakistani traveller therefore needs an approved e-visa before boarding. Airlines are told that only Category Two nationals may board without a visa. Use the passport you will travel with, because the e-visa carries that passport’s particulars.

Timeline

  • Processing and appointments

The e-Visa portal says applications are processed within three working days. Validity starts from the date of issue, not the date of entry, so apply close enough to your trip for a single-entry visa (valid three months) to cover it. You can check progress with Visa Status Enquiry on the portal.

Quick answers

FAQ

Do Pakistanis need a visa for Malawi?

Yes. Pakistan is a Category One country on the Malawi e-Visa portal, so you must obtain a visa or prior authorization before you leave. The simplest route is the official e-visa at evisa.gov.mw.

Can Pakistanis get a visa on arrival in Malawi?

No. Since 24 February 2026 visa on arrival is open only to nationals of Category Two countries. Pakistan is on the Category One list, whose nationals must have a visa before departure.

How much does a Malawi e-visa cost?

US$50 for a single entry or transit, US$150 for a multiple-entry visa valid six months and US$250 for one valid twelve months. A convenience fee is added, and payment is online in US dollars.

How long does processing take?

Malawi processes e-visa applications within three working days, according to the portal’s FAQ.

How long is a single-entry visa valid?

Three months, counted from the date of issue. It can be used for one entry. Multiple-entry visas are valid for six or twelve months.

Can I upload phone photos of my passport?

No. The portal asks for scanned documents and does not accept camera-captured photos of your passport, photo or residence permit.

Is the fee refunded if my visa is refused?

No. E-visa fees are non-refundable, and the Department of Immigration may decline to give reasons for a rejection.

What do I show when I land?

A printed copy of your e-Visa approval letter, together with the same passport you used to apply. Officers at the port of entry can still refuse entry after their own checks.

Can I travel on a second passport?

No. The e-visa carries the details of the passport used to apply, and you must enter Malawi on that passport.

Who do I contact about a delayed application?

Check the status online first. Other queries go to the e-Visa support team at evisa.support@immigration.gov.mw rather than to an embassy.

Is there an official visa approval rate for Pakistanis?

No approval or refusal rate for Pakistani applicants is published by Malawi’s immigration department.
