For Luxembourg, the Embassy of the Kingdom of Belgium in Islamabad is your door. Luxembourg's foreign ministry lists it for Pakistani residents applying for short-stay and long-stay visas, while Luxembourg's own embassy for Pakistan is far away in Beijing. Belgium works with VFS Global in Pakistan, so you book and give fingerprints there. The result is a regular Schengen type C visa for up to 90 days in any 180 days. It costs €90 for adults or €45 for children aged 6 to 12. If a relative in Luxembourg is paying for your trip, ask them about the formal obligation letter.

Luxembourg is one of Europe's smallest countries, a Grand Duchy tucked between Belgium, France and Germany, and it was one of the original Schengen signatories. Pakistani nationals need a Schengen short-stay visa to visit, whether for sightseeing in Luxembourg City's old quarter, a family occasion or meetings with one of its many banks and EU institutions. The type C visa allows up to 90 days in any 180-day period, and it is valid across the Schengen zone.

The most important thing to know is who handles your file. Luxembourg's own embassy covering Pakistan is in Beijing, which is co-accredited to Pakistan. Luxembourg's foreign ministry says that applications from Pakistan, for both short-stay and long-stay visas, go to the Embassy of the Kingdom of Belgium in Islamabad.

Belgium uses VFS Global as its official partner in Pakistan. Book your slot and give your biometrics through the VFS Belgium–Pakistan site, and choose the visit category that fits your trip, such as tourist, business or family visit. Luxembourg's ministry makes one point very clear: when another Schengen state represents Luxembourg, only that state processes the application. Any follow-up therefore goes to the Belgian consular service, not to Luxembourg. Decisions are generally made within 15 calendar days, and this can be extended to 45 if more papers are needed.

The European Commission sets the fee at €90 for adults and €45 for children aged 6 to 12, and under-6s pay nothing. VFS charges its own service fee on top, which is shown in the payment step when you book. One useful Luxembourg feature is the formal obligation letter, or 'engagement de prise en charge'. With it, a sponsor living in Luxembourg promises to cover your stay, healthcare and journey home. Once the foreign ministry approves it, it counts as proof of funds. It is free, valid for six months and covers one trip, but it does not guarantee a visa.

The sponsor can file the letter online on MyGuichet.lu with a LuxTrust product or an eID card, or on paper with their signature legalised by their local commune. Planning to move, work or study rather than visit? From 1 October 2026, Luxembourg long-stay D-visa applications from Pakistan go through Visa on Web at the Belgian post, according to a VFS notice, and the old separate temporary authorisation step is no longer used for new applications. The European Commission's 2024 data show no Luxembourg consulate in Pakistan, so there is no official Luxembourg refusal rate.

Quick answers

FAQ

Do I need a visa to visit Luxembourg from Pakistan?

Yes. Luxembourg is a founding member of the Schengen area, and Pakistani passport holders need a type C Schengen visa for visits of up to 90 days in any 180-day period.

Is there a Luxembourg embassy in Pakistan?

No. Luxembourg's embassy in Beijing is co-accredited to Pakistan. For visas, Luxembourg's foreign ministry sends Pakistani residents to the Embassy of the Kingdom of Belgium in Islamabad.

How do I submit a Luxembourg visa application in Pakistan?

Through VFS Global, the official partner of the Belgian Embassy in Pakistan. Book an appointment on the VFS Belgium–Pakistan site, choose the right visit category, and attend in person for fingerprints and a photo.

What does a Luxembourg Schengen visa cost?

€90 for adults, €45 for children aged 6–12, and free for children under 6, according to the European Commission. VFS adds a service fee, which you will see in the payment step on its site.

Who do I contact about my application's progress?

Belgium. Luxembourg's foreign ministry says that applications lodged with another Schengen state on Luxembourg's behalf are processed only by that state. So all follow-up goes to the Belgian consular service.

What is the formal obligation letter for Luxembourg?

It is an 'engagement de prise en charge'. In it, a sponsor living in Luxembourg promises to cover your stay, healthcare and return. Once approved by the foreign ministry, it counts as proof of funds. It is free, valid for six months and for one trip, and it does not guarantee a visa.

How does my sponsor get the formal obligation approved?

Online on MyGuichet.lu, using a LuxTrust product or an electronic ID card. Or on paper, by legalising the signature at their commune and posting the form to the foreign ministry's passport, visa and legalisation office.

How long does a Luxembourg visa take?

Generally up to 15 calendar days from submission, according to Luxembourg's foreign ministry. This can be extended to 45 days if extra documents are requested, so send a complete file the first time.

What if I want to live or work in Luxembourg?

You will need a long-stay D-visa. A VFS notice says that from 1 October 2026, these applications from Pakistan are made through Visa on Web at the Belgian post. Guichet.lu lists the residence categories.

Is there an official Luxembourg refusal rate for Pakistanis?

No. The European Commission's 2024 consulate statistics list no Luxembourg consulate in Pakistan, because Belgium handles those applications. So there is no official Luxembourg refusal figure.
