Italy destination guide

Visit routes
Schengen Short-Stay Visa Type C

This is the Italy hub. Pick your passport below for a finished guide. Rules differ by nationality.

Italy is a Schengen State. Non-exempt nationals need a Uniform Schengen Visa (Type C) for short tourist visits. Visa-exempt nationals may stay up to 90 days in 180 without a C-visa (ETIAS authorisation may be required when the system applies to their nationality).

Rome, Milan, Venice and family ties make Italy a frequent choice for Pakistani tourists and family visitors. Italy is in the Schengen area and offers no visa-free entry to Pakistani passports, so a uniform short-stay visa must be issued before you travel. What sets Italy apart is geography: the country divides Pakistan between the Italian embassy and consulate, and you may lodge only at the centre that serves your permanent residence.

The Embassy of Italy in Islamabad covers centres in Islamabad, Lahore, Multan and Faisalabad, serving the north and centre of the country. The Consulate General in Karachi covers centres in Karachi and Quetta for residents of Sindh and Balochistan, and it does not receive ordinary visitors at its own counter. A Karachi resident cannot use a Lahore slot because it opens sooner, and lodging in the wrong jurisdiction can block your file, so check your city against the live jurisdiction information before paying any centre fee.

Start on Visa for Italy, the portal of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, known as MAECI. Enter your citizenship, residence, length of stay and purpose, and the wizard tells you whether you need a visa, which documents Italy expects and which mission is competent. Where an online application is used, complete it, print it and submit it in person; the online form alone is not a lodged application.

Collection of applications is outsourced to BLS-Intiana, working under the supervision of the embassy and consulate. Book only through the appointment portals linked from the mission pages, which include waitlist modules when slots are full. Centres offer categories such as tourism, business, visiting family and friends, medical travel, cultural or sports events and study, so choose the one that matches your trip. BLS-Intiana charges a service fee on top of the visa fee. The embassy or consulate, not the centre, decides.

Italian posts tend to look closely at proof of residence for jurisdiction, a detailed bank history, and family invitations prepared in the format the mission requires. Do not assume a France-Visas file or a German form can be reused. Demand for appointments is high, and the wait for a slot can be longer than the decision itself, so join the official waitlist when slots are full and never pay a fixer for a supposed appointment.

Guides on this site: our Italy visit visa requirements guide for Pakistani passport holders at /italy/pakistan explains both jurisdictions, the MAECI wizard, booking with BLS-Intiana and the documents Italy expects. The shared paperwork for every Schengen country is set out in our Schengen visa documents checklist for Pakistan at /guides/schengen-visa-documents-checklist-pakistan.

Which Italian visa centre should I use in Pakistan? The one that covers your permanent residence: Islamabad, Lahore, Multan or Faisalabad under the embassy, or Karachi and Quetta under the consulate.

Can I submit an Italian visa application at the consulate in Karachi? No. The consulate says it does not receive ordinary applicants at its counter. Short-stay files go through the designated BLS-Intiana centres.

Is the Visa for Italy online form enough to apply? No. Print the completed application and lodge it in person at your BLS-Intiana centre.

What can I do when no Italian appointments are available? Use the official waitlist module linked from the mission pages, and never pay unofficial sellers for appointments.
