French Guiana is a French overseas department on the South American mainland and is not part of the Schengen area. Its visa-free list is the second annex to a ministerial arrêté dated 26 July 2011, and Pakistan is absent from it. Pakistani citizens need a short-stay visa valid for French Guiana, issued for Guiana alone or marked DFA, before arriving by air or across the land borders with Brazil and Suriname.

French Guiana is a French department on the north-east coast of South America, between Brazil and Suriname. Most of it is Amazon rainforest, and it is home to the Guiana Space Centre at Kourou, the former penal colony on the Îles du Salut and the river towns of Saint-Laurent-du-Maroni and Saint-Georges. Visitors include space-industry staff, researchers, eco-tourists and overland travellers.

Pakistani passport holders need a visa. The department is governed by French law yet sits outside Schengen, and its visa-free list leaves Pakistan out. The visa must be valid for French Guiana, alone or as part of a DFA sticker.

Because the territory has land borders, the order names official crossings: the bridge and landing stage at Saint-Georges-de-l'Oyapock facing Brazil, and the international ferry at Saint-Laurent-du-Maroni facing Suriname. Air arrivals come through Cayenne's Rochambeau airport.

Applications start on France-Visas and finish at the collection centre the French embassy in Islamabad assigns; adults pay EUR 60. Holders of an in-date French or full-Schengen residence card or long-stay visa are let in for short stays without the extra sticker.

Stays are limited to 90 days in any 180. Bring your bookings, funds, insurance and onward ticket, and check health entry rules before flying. No official turnaround exists, so do not leave it late; the embassy will take your file as early as six months before you go.

  • France-Visas application for an overseas short-stay visa that covers French Guiana

Quick answers

FAQ

Do Pakistanis need a visa for French Guiana?

Yes. Guiana's entry text, the 2011 ministerial arrêté it shares with the French Caribbean and La Réunion, leaves Pakistan off the visa-free annex. You must hold a short-stay visa covering Guiana.

Is French Guiana covered by my Schengen visa?

No. Even though it is part of France and uses the euro, French Guiana is outside Schengen. The interior ministry treats overseas visas as a separate category that must name the territory.

How much is the visa?

Adults pay EUR 60. France-Visas charges EUR 35 for a child between six and twelve, and infants under six pay nothing.

What is the maximum length of stay?

Ninety days within any rolling 180-day period, counting days spent in Martinique or other territories on the same sticker.

Can I enter overland from Brazil or Suriname?

Yes, at official crossing points. The order lists the Saint-Georges-de-l'Oyapock bridge and landing stage on the Brazilian border and the international ferry at Saint-Laurent-du-Maroni on the Suriname side. You still need the visa.

Which airport do international flights use?

Cayenne's airport at Rochambeau (Matoury), listed in the order as a permanent controlled entry point. The port of Dégrad des Cannes opens as needed.

I am going to Kourou for a space-sector job. What do I need?

A visa covering French Guiana and documents from the organisation hosting you. Paid work in France normally also needs a work authorisation, so ask your employer to confirm the permit before you travel.

How do I apply from Pakistan?

Use the France-Visas online form and then present your documents where the French embassy in Islamabad tells you to. The earliest filing date is six months before travel.

Is there a border visa for emergencies?

Rarely. The arrêté permits one for at most 15 days, and only if you document a sudden, compelling reason that left no time to apply abroad.

Are residents of Schengen countries exempt?

Yes. If your card or long-stay visa comes from France or a full Schengen country and is still current, Guiana lets you in for up to 90 days per 180 without the overseas visa.

What are the passport conditions?

It must outlast your departure by three months or more, have a minimum of two free pages and be under ten years old.

Can I continue to Paris from Cayenne?

Not with this sticker, which is valid only overseas. Someone already in Guiana who wants to go on to Europe may lodge a Schengen request with the prefect in Cayenne, according to the interior ministry's overseas visa page.

Is there an official refusal rate?

No. French Guiana visa decisions are not reported by nationality in any public statistics.
