Pakistani citizens need a Schengen visa for Finland. In Pakistan you apply at the Netherlands' VFS Global visa application centres in Islamabad, Karachi or Lahore, which accept Finland applications. Finland asks visitors to show at least €50 a day for their stay, and Pakistani travellers also need an airport transit visa to change planes at a Finnish airport.

Finland does not run its own visa centre in Pakistan. Instead, NetherlandsWorldwide says the Netherlands' visa application locations in Pakistan, run by VFS Global in Islamabad, Karachi and Lahore, also accept Schengen visa applications for Finland. That matters for the paperwork. You follow Finland's rules on documents and money, checked on Finland's official finlandvisa.fi site, but you book, attend and collect through the Netherlands' VFS process. Apply for Finland only if it is your main destination. If you are spending more nights in another Schengen country, apply to that country instead.

One rule catches many Pakistani travellers. Finland's foreign ministry lists Pakistan among the nationalities that need an airport transit visa (category A) to change flights inside a Finnish airport. If you are flying through Helsinki to a non-Schengen country, check whether you need one. A short-stay category C visa covers visits of up to 90 days in any 180-day period, and can be single, double or multiple entry. A multiple-entry visa can be valid for up to five years.

Finland is unusually specific about money. Its foreign ministry says visitors must have at least €50 a day for their stay, and border guards can ask you to prove it again on arrival. If a relative or friend in Finland is paying, they fill in Finland's proof of sponsorship form. The form must be signed in front of a notary public, and they attach their ID and residence permit, employment contract, three months of payslips and bank statements, and their lease or ownership papers if you will stay with them. Even when your host pays, you still show your own finances. For a private visit, the host's wealth is not counted when your finances are assessed. If your host is not paying, a free-form invitation letter is enough.

At the VFS centre you must appear in person, even if you are under 18. You hand in your passport and documents, give fingerprints (unless you gave them for a Schengen visa in the last 59 months, or you are under 12), and pay the visa fee plus the VFS service charge. NetherlandsWorldwide advises booking the appointment yourself rather than through an intermediary, and making a separate booking for each person. You can apply up to six months before the trip and at least 15 days before. Finland says the normal maximum processing time is 15 days, but it can take longer if the application needs a closer look.

When the decision is made, VFS emails you, but the email does not say whether you were approved. You collect your passport or have it sent. Check the visa sticker straight away, because a wrong name or dates can stop you boarding or entering. If you are refused, the decision letter explains the reasons and how to challenge them. Once you are in Finland, the police can extend a visa free of charge if a cancelled flight or sudden illness prevents you from leaving. For serious personal reasons, such as a close relative's sudden illness, an extension costs €30.
