The Cocos (Keeling) Islands fall within Australia's migration zone, so Pakistani travellers need an Australian Visitor visa (subclass 600) granted before departure; flights run from Perth. Normal Australian customs and immigration procedures apply to entry from overseas.
The Cocos (Keeling) Islands are a remote Indian Ocean atoll group of 27 coral islands, only two of them inhabited: West Island, with the airport and most visitor beds, and Home Island, home to the Cocos Malay community. The lagoon draws snorkellers, kite surfers and anglers, and visitor numbers are small.
Like Christmas Island, Cocos is an Australian external territory. The Migration Act 1958 applies there and counts the islands as part of Australia, so coming from overseas means meeting ordinary Australian immigration rules. A foreign national must hold an Australian visa that is in effect.
Holders of a Pakistani passport apply for the Visitor visa (subclass 600) in the Tourist stream, lodged online in ImmiAccount. Pakistan cannot use the ETA or eVisitor, so the visa has to be granted in advance. No Cocos-only visa, permit or arrival tax exists for tourists.
Access is by air from Perth on the Qantas service to the Indian Ocean Territories, which also serves Christmas Island, or by private yacht anchoring at Direction Island after contacting the local police and clearing customs. Air passengers show identification and pass customs and immigration checks even though the route is domestic.
Practical planning matters on an atoll this size. There are no ATMs and no mobile coverage, the health clinics refer serious cases to Perth, and modest dress is expected on Home Island. Book accommodation before you apply, keep the booking for your visa file, and carry enough cash.
Checklist
Document requirements
- Valid Pakistani passport for the full mainland-plus-atoll trip
- ImmiAccount lodgement: subclass 600, Tourist stream, from outside Australia
- West Island accommodation booking (beds are scarce, secure them first)
- Perth–Cocos return flights, with any Christmas Island stop listed
- Enough cash and bank evidence, since Cocos has no ATM
- Documents tying you to Pakistan: work letter, business papers, family details
- Medical, police or biometric checks when requested by Home Affairs
- Passport on you for the Perth check-in and the West Island arrival
Neither the ETA nor eVisitor accepts Pakistani passports. Cocos lies inside Australia's migration zone, so your subclass 600 grant must already be in effect when you fly out of Perth toward West Island.

Quick answers
FAQ
Do Pakistanis need a visa for the Cocos (Keeling) Islands?
Yes. The islands are part of Australia under migration law, so you need an Australian Visitor visa (subclass 600) before you travel. There is no separate Cocos visa.
How do I apply?
Create an ImmiAccount and lodge a Visitor visa application in the Tourist stream from outside Australia. Upload your passport, financial evidence, travel plans and proof of ties to Pakistan.
Is there an extra fee to enter Cocos?
No territory-specific visa fee is charged. You pay the standard Australian Visitor visa charge, which Home Affairs shows through its Visa Pricing Estimator.
How do I reach the islands?
By air from Perth on the Indian Ocean Territories service, or by yacht. Because the flights start on the mainland, your visa also covers your time in Western Australia.
Can I combine Cocos with Christmas Island?
Yes. Both are Australian territories, so one valid Australian visa covers both, along with the mainland. The same Perth air service reaches both territories.
What happens if I arrive by yacht?
Anchor at Direction Island and call the local police on VHF channel 20. Everyone stays on board until police, customs and quarantine clearance is complete, and foreign crew still need Australian visas.
Is there an ATM or mobile signal?
No ATMs and no mobile reception. Many businesses take cards and accommodation usually offers WiFi, but bring enough cash for the stay.
What about medical care?
Clinics on West Island and Home Island handle essential care, and serious cases are sent to Perth. Check that your insurance includes evacuation before you go.
Is there a dress code?
On Home Island visitors are asked to wear modest outfits covering shoulders and upper legs, out of respect for the Cocos Malay community.
What time zone are the islands in?
Cocos runs one and a half hours behind Perth time and three and a half hours behind Sydney, with no daylight saving. Allow for this when checking flight times on your itinerary.
Can I visit Home Island as a tourist?
Yes. A ferry links West Island and Home Island from Monday to Saturday, and local operators run cultural tours and museum visits. Ferry times are set by the local co-operative.
Do I need travel insurance?
It is not a visa condition for every applicant, but it is strongly advisable. Foreign tourists are not covered by Medicare, and an evacuation flight to Perth for treatment is expensive without cover.
How early should I apply?
Processing times change monthly and are posted by Home Affairs. Visitor beds are very limited, so secure accommodation, then apply well before your travel date.
