Christmas Island is part of Australia for migration purposes, so Pakistani visitors need an Australian Visitor visa (subclass 600) before travel, normally entering through Perth. Arrivals from outside Australia go through standard Australian customs and immigration.

Christmas Island sits in the Indian Ocean about 2,600 km north-west of Perth and much closer to Java than to the Australian mainland. Two thirds of it is national park, famous for the red crab migration between October and January, whale sharks offshore and seabirds such as the Christmas Island frigatebird.

Although it lies far from the mainland, the island is an Australian external territory. The Migration Act 1958 treats Christmas Island as part of Australia, so normal Australian immigration rules apply to anyone arriving from overseas, and a foreign visitor needs an Australian visa that is in effect.

Pakistani nationals therefore apply for the Australian Visitor visa (subclass 600), Tourist stream, through ImmiAccount. Pakistan is not on the ETA or eVisitor lists, so the grant has to arrive before travel. The island issues no visa of its own and charges no separate entry fee.

Passenger flights reach the island from Perth, operated by Qantas since November 2025, and a small number of yachts call at Flying Fish Cove, where vessels must contact the Australian Border Force and clear quarantine before anyone goes ashore. Customs, immigration and biosecurity checks apply on arrival.

Facilities are limited. There is one ATM, a small hospital that sends serious cases to Perth, and modest-dress expectations in the Malay Kampong. Bring enough medication for the trip, arrange insurance with evacuation cover, and keep your passport with you even though domestic travellers can use other photo ID.

Checklist

Document requirements

  • Passport from Pakistan valid until you are back home from Perth
  • Subclass 600 Tourist stream lodgement in ImmiAccount, made outside Australia
  • Flight plan showing the Perth leg and the Qantas sector to Christmas Island
  • Christmas Island accommodation confirmation, especially during red crab season
  • Funds evidence: personal bank statements or a sponsor's financial documents
  • Proof of your job, studies or family in Pakistan
  • Extra checks (medical, police clearance, biometrics) if an officer asks
  • Keep the passport handy at Perth airport; other photo ID suits only Australian travellers

Pakistan sits outside the ETA and eVisitor lists. Because the Migration Act counts Christmas Island as Australia, landing there requires the same in-effect Australian grant you use to pass through Perth.
