Up to 90 consecutive days in any 180-day period

Bonaire is one of three special municipalities of the Netherlands in the Caribbean, alongside Saba and St Eustatius, but it has its own entry rules and is outside the Schengen area. Pakistani travellers are not visa-exempt, so a Caribbean visa from the Dutch authorities is needed for a holiday or family visit, applied for at a VFS Global office in Pakistan. A stay on Bonaire may last 90 days in a row within any half-year (180 days).

Bonaire is a diver's island in the southern Caribbean. Its whole coastline is a protected marine park, flamingos feed in the salt pans near Pekelmeer, Washington Slagbaai National Park covers the rugged north, and Kralendijk keeps a relaxed waterfront. Pakistani visitors need a visa first.

Bonaire is a special municipality of the Netherlands, yet it keeps immigration rules separate from Europe. Pakistani citizens are not on the visa-free list, so they apply for the Caribbean visa at a VFS Global office in Islamabad, Lahore or Karachi.

If you already hold a multiple-entry Schengen visa, a British or Irish visa with multiple entries, or residence in the Schengen zone, the UK, Ireland, the United States or Canada, you can travel without it. A US or Canadian tourist visa does not exempt Pakistani passport holders.

The consular fee is €80, payable alongside the application centre's charge. The file includes a work or business certificate, recent bank records, a booking for your accommodation, a return booking and US$15,000 of medical cover valid on Bonaire. Most decisions come within about two weeks.

Once admitted, you may stay up to 90 days in a row within 180 days. The visa also covers the other islands of the Dutch Caribbean, but it is not valid for the European Netherlands, and it never permits paid work.

Quick answers

FAQ

Do Pakistanis need a visa for Bonaire?

Yes. Pakistani citizens need the Dutch Caribbean visa for Bonaire unless they hold a document that exempts them.

Is Bonaire covered by a Schengen visa?

Bonaire is not in the Schengen area, but holders of a multiple-entry Schengen visa or Schengen residence permit are still exempt from the Caribbean visa. A single-entry Schengen visa does not give that benefit.

What other documents exempt me?

Residence in the United States or Canada, residence in the UK or Ireland, or a British or Irish visa that permits more than one entry.

Is my Canadian visitor visa enough?

No. Pakistan is not among the few nationalities that can use a US or Canadian visa instead of a Caribbean one.

How much do I pay?

Dutch consular fees in Pakistan list a Caribbean visa at €80, and the visa application centre bills its service separately.

How long can I remain on Bonaire?

Ninety consecutive days at most, within 180 days.

How long does the decision take?

Usually up to 15 calendar days. Lodge your file up to 3 months ahead of the trip.

Can I dive or snorkel on a visitor visa?

Yes. Tourism, including diving in the marine park, is exactly what this visa is for. What you cannot do is paid work.

Can I connect through Bonaire airport?

Yes. A transit of up to 48 hours with an onward ticket needs no visa.

Do cruise passengers need a visa?

Not if the ship stays no more than 48 hours in port.

Can I appeal a refusal?

Yes. For Bonaire the refusal letter explains the objection procedure.

Does the visa cover Saba and St Eustatius?

Yes. The same visa works for the other Caribbean Netherlands islands and for Aruba, Curaçao and Sint Maarten too.

Can I travel on to Amsterdam?

Not on this visa. The Caribbean visa is not valid for the European Netherlands or the Schengen countries.

What if I am moving to Bonaire on a residence permit?

Special rules apply when collecting a long-stay residence permit. Check the National Office for the Caribbean Netherlands list linked from NetherlandsWorldwide.

Can minors travel with one parent?

Yes, with a birth certificate extract, a consent form signed by the absent parent and a copy of that parent's passport.

Do frequent visitors get any help?

Yes. If you are 18 or over, have ties with a person or organisation on the islands and plan more than one trip in 4 years, the Caribbean Carpet Programme lets you skip the personal visit after your first application and gives priority handling with longer-valid visas.

What happens at the VFS appointment?

You hand over the originals and copies, sign a declaration that incomplete files may be refused without a refund, and give a digital photo. The Dutch ministry may ask for an interview or more papers.

Is there an official refusal rate for Pakistanis?

No figures are published.
