Summary

Embassy visa required
Visa type
Afghanistan visa (applied through the embassy in Islamabad)
Stay limit
One month (standard single-entry visa); business visas up to 3 years
Entries
Single entry (multiple for business and some other types)

The Embassy of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan in Islamabad states that it issues visas to Pakistani nationals and to people living in and applying from Pakistan. Pakistani travellers need a visa before entering Afghanistan. Most visas are single entry for a one-month stay; business and some other categories can be issued for up to 3 years with multiple entries. Longer stays need an extension from the Consulate Directorate of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Kabul.

Afghanistan, Pakistan's north-western neighbour, is home to the Blue Mosque of Mazar-i-Sharif, the gardens of Babur in Kabul, the minaret of Jam and the Bamiyan valley. However close the border, Pakistani passport holders need an Afghan visa arranged in advance.

The Embassy of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan in Islamabad states plainly that it issues visas to Pakistani nationals, and also to other people living in Pakistan. The process starts with an online application form, which you print and bring to the embassy on Nazimuddin Road in sector F-7/4 together with your passport and photos.

Regulations allow the embassy to issue mainly single-entry visas covering a one-month stay. Business visas and some other types are the exception and can be granted for up to three years with multiple entries. Anyone who needs more time inside the country applies to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' Consulate Directorate in Kabul.

Requirements are short: a passport valid for at least six months with free pages, and two matching colour photos on white. Business and employment travellers must add an employer or host letter and an authorisation reference number from the Afghan foreign ministry. Journalists follow a separate route that starts with a letter from their agency.

The embassy does not publish a visa fee or a standard processing time on its visa page. You are given a collection date when you apply, so allow enough time before your journey and contact the embassy by phone or email if anything is unclear.
