The United Kingdom is a common trip for Pakistani families, whether for a wedding, a London holiday or a business meeting. Pakistani nationals are in the group that must hold a visa before travelling, so an electronic travel authorisation is not an option. The visa almost every short trip uses is the Standard Visitor visa, which covers tourism, seeing family or friends, certain business activities such as meetings and conferences, and private medical treatment.

The application happens in stages. First you complete and pay for the form online on gov.uk. Then you book an appointment at a visa application centre, which gov.uk's centre finder links to VFS Global for Pakistan. At the centre you prove your identity, give fingerprints and a photo, and hand in your supporting documents. Gov.uk says your passport comes back the same day, although the centre may keep some other papers while UKVI decides. Every family member needs a separate application, fee and appointment.

UKVI's test is simple to state and easy to fail: you must show that you will leave at the end of the visit, that you can support yourself and pay for the return journey, and that you will not make the UK your home. Build the file around those points. A letter on company letterhead giving your role, salary and length of service helps employees; business registration or recent invoices help the self-employed. Bank statements should show where the money came from. Copies of old passports show your travel history. If a relative is paying, include proof of their finances and their status in the UK. Any Urdu document needs a full English translation that carries the translator's name, signature, contact details and the date.

Common mistakes include a large, unexplained deposit just before applying, a sponsor letter with no evidence behind it, and trip dates or costs on the form that do not match your bookings. Buying non-refundable tickets before the decision is another, because handing in documents never guarantees a visa. Remember too that a visitor cannot work, claim public funds, live in the UK through back-to-back visits, or marry without a Marriage Visitor visa. A tuberculosis test applies only to stays longer than a normal visit.

Appointment waits sit outside UKVI's decision window, and gov.uk publishes no national waiting time for them, so apply as early as the rules allow.
