Bangkok, Phuket and the islands of the Andaman coast are popular with Pakistani holidaymakers and honeymooners. Pakistani passport holders need a Thai visa issued before travel, and the Royal Thai Embassy in Islamabad now takes applications through the official e-Visa system at thaievisa.go.th. You no longer visit the embassy in person to apply. For a holiday, choose the Tourist Visa category in the system.

Your file is handled either by the Royal Thai Embassy in Islamabad or by the Royal Thai Consulate-General in Karachi, depending on where you are. Thailand adds a rule that surprises many applicants: you must be physically present in Pakistan for the whole application and upload proof of your current location. The embassy's examples are a rental agreement, a utility bill or a Pakistan immigration stamp if you have just returned from abroad. Applications without valid proof are rejected.

The process is straightforward. Create an account on the portal, which can also hold applications for your family members. Fill in the form, then upload your passport biodata page, a recent photo in the format the portal specifies, your proof of location and the supporting documents listed for the Tourist category. For files handled in Islamabad, the fee is paid offline in cash at the embassy's visa gate, so bring your application confirmation; for Karachi, check the consulate's website for payment options. The embassy counts processing from the moment your fee is received and acknowledged, so pay promptly.

The embassy is blunt about fraud. Airline tickets and hotel bookings must be genuine; if any document is fake, the application is rejected immediately, and the applicant, the travel agent or both may be blacklisted. You do not need a fixer, because anyone can apply on their own, and requests for extra money should be reported to the embassy. Travel agents may submit on your behalf, but the embassy is not responsible for incomplete files they lodge. Fees are non-refundable, even if you withdraw.

After approval, first print your e-Visa: the embassy says mobile or electronic copies are not accepted at check-in or by Thai immigration. Next, complete the Thailand Digital Arrival Card, or TDAC, online in the short window before arrival that Thai Immigration sets. Your name, passport number, nationality and date of birth cannot be edited later, and the TDAC is not a visa, so carry the printed e-Visa as well.

Can I apply for a Thai visa while outside Pakistan? Not through the missions in Pakistan. The embassy says you must be physically present in Pakistan for the whole process and prove your location.

Can I show my Thai e-Visa on my phone? No. The embassy says the e-Visa must be printed. Mobile copies are not accepted at check-in or immigration.

Is the TDAC a visa? No. It is a digital arrival card that every non-Thai visitor completes online before arrival, in addition to a valid visa.
