Summary
- Visa type
- Short-stay visa valid for Greenland (applied for through Denmark)
- Stay limit
- Up to 90 days
- Entries
- As stated on the visa sticker
Greenland is not part of the EU or the Schengen area, and a visa for Denmark or any other Schengen country does not allow entry. Pakistan is on Denmark’s list of countries with a visa requirement, so Pakistani passport holders need a visa whose sticker states that it is valid for Greenland. The application goes to a Danish diplomatic mission or a representation processing visas for Denmark. The Embassy of Denmark in Islamabad handles visa applications for Greenland.
Greenland, the world’s largest island, is mostly covered by its ice sheet. Visitors come for the calving glaciers of the Ilulissat Icefjord, the northern lights over Nuuk and the colourful settlements along the west coast.
Although part of the Kingdom of Denmark, Greenland sits outside the EU and Schengen. A Danish or Schengen visa does not cover it. Pakistan is on Denmark’s visa-requirement list, so Pakistani travellers need a visa marked as valid for Greenland.
You apply exactly as for a Danish visa, and the Embassy of Denmark in Islamabad handles Greenland applications. A single form can cover both Greenland and the Schengen transit most routes need. Add evidence of your stay in Greenland.
The usual fee is 90 euros plus the visa centre’s charge. Danish guidance expects about DKK 350 a day in funds, and a passport issued in the last ten years. Insurance is only required if the visa also covers Schengen.
If you are already in Denmark without a Greenland-valid visa, you must ask the Danish Immigration Service for an entry permit. Bring your passport, as EU identity cards other than Nordic ones are not accepted.
Checklist
Document requirements
- Visa application completed through Denmark’s online system, with Greenland named as a destination
- Documentation of your planned stay in Greenland (itinerary, bookings or invitation)
- Pakistani passport issued within the last 10 years and valid three months past the visa’s expiry
- Evidence of funds for the trip (Danish guidance: around DKK 350 a day, or DKK 500 when staying in a hotel)
- Travel medical insurance only if the visa will also cover Schengen; not required for a Greenland-only visa
- Visa fee of 90 euros plus the visa centre service fee
- Fingerprints recorded when the application is submitted
Pakistan is a visa-required country for Denmark, so Pakistani citizens need a visa marked valid for Greenland. A Schengen visa on its own is not enough.

Processing and appointments
The Danish Immigration Service does not publish a separate processing time for Greenland visas. The Embassy in Islamabad warns that appointments at the visa centre can take longer because of heavy workload and advises applying well before travel.

Quick answers
FAQ
Do Pakistanis need a visa for Greenland?
Yes. Pakistan is on Denmark’s visa-requirement list, so you need a visa that is specifically valid for Greenland.
Is my Schengen visa enough?
No. Greenland is outside the EU and Schengen, and a Danish or other Schengen visa does not grant entry there.
Where do I apply from Pakistan?
Through the Embassy of Denmark in Islamabad, which processes Greenland visa applications, using Denmark’s online application and the visa centre named by the Embassy.
What does the visa sticker need to say?
It must state that the visa is valid for entry to Greenland. Check this when you collect your passport.
Can one application cover Denmark and Greenland?
Yes. You fill in a single form even if you also need a Schengen visa for the journey, and you include evidence of your Greenland stay.
Why would I need a Schengen visa too?
Most routes to Greenland pass through a Schengen country such as Denmark, so you will most likely need one for the transit.
How much is the fee?
Normally 90 euros, with 45 euros for children aged 6 to 11, plus the visa centre’s service fee.
Is travel insurance required?
Not for a visa valid only for Greenland. If your visa also covers Schengen, Danish rules require insurance of at least 30,000 euros.
How much money must I show?
Denmark’s general guide is about DKK 350 per day, rising to about DKK 500 per day if you stay in a hotel.
What passport rules apply?
Your passport must have been issued within the last ten years and stay valid for three months after the visa expires.
I am already in Denmark on a Schengen visa. Can I go on to Greenland?
Only if your visa is valid for Greenland. Otherwise apply to the Danish Immigration Service for an entry permit through its contact form.
What does that entry permit request need?
The purpose of the trip, a flight ticket or other travel documentation, and an explanation of why you did not apply for a Greenland visa before entering Denmark.
Does a Danish residence permit let me visit?
Yes. A valid residence permit entitling you to live in Denmark, or a valid EU residence card for Denmark, allows entry to Greenland. An expired one does not.
I hold a Danish D visa but no residence card yet. Can I travel?
Generally you must wait for the residence card. In urgent cases you can request an entry permit, explaining the urgency.
Is an EU identity card valid for Greenland?
No. EU and Schengen ID cards do not give entry to Greenland, apart from Nordic ID cards, so bring your passport.
Are fingerprints taken?
Yes. Biometrics are normally recorded when the application is submitted, as for a Danish visa.
Should I use an agent?
The Embassy in Islamabad asks applicants not to use agents, warning that false documents usually lead to refusal.
Is there an official refusal rate for Pakistanis?
No. Denmark does not publish Greenland-specific refusal figures by nationality.
Do Nordic citizens need permission?
No. Citizens of Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden can enter, live and work in Greenland without a permit.
