Visit routes
Schengen Short-Stay Visa Type C

This is the Netherlands hub. Pick your passport below for a finished guide. Rules differ by nationality.

Netherlands is a Schengen State. Non-exempt nationals need a Uniform Schengen Visa (Type C) for short tourist visits. Visa-exempt nationals may stay up to 90 days in 180 without a C-visa (ETIAS authorisation may be required when the system applies to their nationality).

Amsterdam's canals, spring tulip season and relatives across Dutch cities attract Pakistani visitors, and NetherlandsWorldwide, the Dutch government's information site, makes the route clear. All short-stay applications in Pakistan go to VFS Global, which runs centres in Islamabad, Karachi and Lahore. VFS takes your documents, fingerprints and fees, and the Dutch Embassy in Islamabad and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs make the decision.

The Dutch centres in Pakistan accept applicants who live in Pakistan or Afghanistan. If you live elsewhere, for example on a work visa in the Gulf, NetherlandsWorldwide asks you to apply in your country of residence or check first whether Pakistan is possible. The Netherlands must also be your main destination. The same centres take Schengen applications for Finland, so Finland-bound travellers should read Finland's own rules first.

There is no single Dutch list for everyone. NetherlandsWorldwide sends you to the VFS checklist for your main purpose, such as tourism, a family visit or business, and you print that checklist and bring it to the appointment with the documents. Complete the Schengen form online, then print and sign it; a form completed online carries a unique code, and a form without it or copied from someone else can cause problems. Every traveller, babies included, needs a separate form and a separate appointment. Book with VFS yourself rather than through an intermediary, as the Dutch government advises; VFS says appointments are free.

Some Dutch requirements catch out family visitors. If you will stay with relatives or friends, your host must sign the official proof of sponsorship and/or private accommodation form and have it legalised by the municipality where they are registered; a plain letter is not enough, so hosts should start early. And the checklist asks for a travel reservation in your name, not a paid ticket. Add proof of legal residence, evidence of who pays for the trip and Schengen travel medical insurance.

At the centre, everyone attends in person, including minors, though young children give no fingerprints. You answer questions about the trip, pay the consular fee in cash in rupees plus the VFS charge, and choose collection or delivery. The email saying processing has finished does not reveal the outcome. When your passport comes back, check the sticker at once; if a name, date or validity is wrong, contact the embassy before you fly, because an airline can refuse boarding. A refusal letter explains the reasons and the options NetherlandsWorldwide sets out.

Guides on this site: our Netherlands visit visa guide for Pakistani passport holders at /netherlands/pakistan covers the process stage by stage, the sponsor form and the consular fee table. Where do I apply for a Netherlands visa in Pakistan? At the VFS Global centres in Islamabad, Karachi or Lahore, if you live in Pakistan or Afghanistan. The embassy decides the application.

Does my Dutch host need to legalise the sponsor form? Yes. The proof of sponsorship and/or private accommodation form must be signed by your host and legalised by the Dutch municipality where they are registered.

Do I need to buy a flight ticket before applying? No. The Dutch checklist asks for a travel reservation in your name, not a paid ticket.

Can I apply for a Finland visa at the Dutch centres? Yes. NetherlandsWorldwide says Schengen applications for Finland can also be made at the Dutch application locations in Pakistan.
